Hair loss is a difficult experience to come to terms with and this can be if it us temporary or longer term. Many people feel anxious, upset and even depressed due to hair loss. This is why human hair wigs can be so important at this time for our patients as a human hair wig can help to bring back some of the confidence that is lost along with the hair.

It can be tricky to know where to start if you have not worn a wig before, so we have come up with a helpful guide to give you some tips and pointers when it comes to choosing a human hair wig.

Research –

When choosing a wig it is important to research so you ensure that you are getting the right wig for you we suggest you think about the following pointers;

  • Type — Human hair wigs vs synthetic hair wigs.
  • Comfort — Fabric and your local climate can affect wig comfort.
  • Style — Think about the cut and colour you want to try.
  • Brand — Choose a trustworthy retailer to provide your wig.
  • Cost — Consider wig prices, especially if you’re not getting a wig on the NHS.

Synthetic or human –

When thinking of choosing a wig the first choice is whether you want a synthetic or human hair wig. A synthetic wig is cheaper than a human hair wig however human hair wigs will last longer and look more natural and be more comfortable.

Here are some pros and cons of a human hair wig;

Pros of human hair wigs:

  • Hair falls naturally around the face and shoulders.
  • You have more styling options, including using hairspray, mousse, and heat styling tools.
  • Last more than a year (with good care and upkeep).
  • Human hair wigs are customisable, so you can cut and even colour them.
  • Less likely to fade in the sun than synthetic wigs.

Cons of human hair wigs

  • Human hair wigs are more expensive than synthetic wigs.
  • You’ll need to style your wig on a daily basis
  • The hair can become dry so needs to be conditioned regularly.

You will then need to decide if you wish to have a basic cap or lace front. A lace front gives a more realistic line.

Some tips we feel are useful when choosing your cap type are as follows;

  • Parting – Mesh tops allow a parting to show
  • Climate – If you are often in a hot climate basic caps are more breathable
  • Price – Hand tied caps can be more expensive, but they are more realistic and comfortable
  • Styles- If you want to style your hair a hand tied cap is much more easy to work with.
