Some common causes of hair loss in children are listed below but please do always ensure you see a Doctor if you think your child is losing their hair.

  • Tinea Capitis – This is a scalp infection and can be spread by combs, brushes and even hats. It is similar to ringworm but on the scalp itself. Tinea capitis is a fungal infection. The hair loss caused by this is patchy and the skin is red and bumpy with small black dots.
  • Alopecia – This is an auto immune condition and affects around 1 in 1000 children and it is caused by the immune system attacking the hair follicles. The types of alopecia are as follows;
  1. Alopecia areata – bald patches on the scalp
  2. Alopecia totalis – total loss of hair on the scalp
  3. Alopecia universalis – all of the hair on the body is lost

Some treatments include creams or medications from the GP. Often hair grows back within a year but in this time, children may benefit from one of our children’s wigs for hair loss.

  • Trichotillomania – This is a condition when children pull out their own hair. It can cause patchy hair and broken hair. The hair does usually always grow back and counselling therapies can help to stop this condition.
  • Telogen Effluvium – When a child has telogen effluvium the hair is lost at a rate of around 300 hairs a day rather than 100. Sometimes it is not always noticed but can cause bald patches in the hair. It can be triggered by stressful life events or illness.
  • Nutrient deficiency – Sometimes a child can lose hair if they are not getting enough of certain vitamins such as Zinc, B12 and Iron,
  • Hypothyroidism -The thyroid is a gland in the neck which releases hormones. If the thyroid doesn’t make enough hormones, it can cause weight gain, constipation, tiredness and hair loss. It is treated with medication.
